Welcome!

My first post.  I’ll start off by telling you a little bit about the point of this blog.  I decided to start For the Love of Lit for two main reasons:

  • I was inspired to start a blog after attending and participating in Podcamp Pittsburgh 4 this fall
  • I wanted to share my love of books with other readers

I mentioned this idea a few days ago on Twitter and got some great feedback from other local women who have similar tastes in books as I do.  Personally, I like when someone (other than Amazon) recommends a book to me; I usually end up liking it.  So I thought, why don’t I do this for other people?  Plus, it will give me an opportunity to find out about new books or authors.

The books I read are mostly books that are targeted to a female audience (sorry, men!) and I can’t resist a good chick lit book (see Chick Lit 100).  I’ll read anything from contemporary fiction to mystery/thriller to chick lit to biographies.  Here are some of my favorite authors (in no particular order): Joy Fielding, Sandra Brown, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jane Green, Jennifer Weiner, Sophie Kinsella/Madeleine Wickham, Jodi Picoult, Emily Giffin, Elin Hilderbrand, Kristin Hannah, Jennifer Crusie, Nicholas Sparks, Dan Brown, et cetera.  Huh… almost all of those are women.  I do read books by men, really.  Those are just some of the authors who have multiple books that I own.

I also own an Amazon Kindle - which is the best thing EVER!  My lovely boyfriend got it for me as a gift and it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received.  I ran of space on our bookshelf so the Kindle prevents us from having to buy another bookshelf.

Speaking of the bookshelf, one day I decided that it would be fantastic idea to alphabetize the bookshelf.  DO NOT TRY THAT AT HOME.  It was the worst idea I’ve ever had.  I emptied a ton of books onto the floor and didn’t get very far before I got fed up and just shoved them back onto the shelf in a random fashion.

Anyway, back to the point.  Ah, yes, I love the Kindle.  The best thing about it is that I can download free books from it!  FREE.  I love free stuff.  They have a ton of “old” books that have been put into an electronic format by volunteers (such as “Pride and Prejudice”, “Treasure Island”, and “Little Women”, among many others), but they have a bunch of newer books that are free, but only for a limited time.  I tend to check the Kindle Best Sellers page every few days – that’s where all the free books end up showing up.  I’ve downloaded so many free books from authors that I’ve never heard of before.  Most of the time, the books are actually good.

I think I may have gotten a little off-topic, but I hope you keep reading my future posts!  I plan on giving short reviews and recommendations of books that I’ve read and definitely welcome your feedback and comments!  I’m going to also look into an idea that one of my Twitter friends had – a local book swap.  Not sure how I’d do that here (discussion forum?) but it seems like a great idea!  Stay tuned.
